Arts and sports to get a boost with $40m campus upgrading plan

Bid goodbye to Canteen One
and Blk 73, two of the oldest
buildings on campus, as they
are soon making way for an
iconic building for the arts, and
an air-conditioned canteen.
“We’re thinking of building a Cultural
Centre with a dance studio, a
recital studio, and a small theatre,
to bring the arts scene to life,” said
the Principal, Mr Chia Mia Chiang.
A staff meeting area will be
built at Blk 73 to replace the
current Staff Hub at Blk 16.
“It’s all part of a game plan
to renew the campus,” he said.
Plans are still under wraps as a
panel is currently deciding on the
specifications for the $40 million
renewal programme, Phase Six,
before inviting architects to participate
in a design competition.
Mr Chia explained, “The Cultural
Centre will have elegant, clean
lines which blend in with the architecture
of the Convention Centre.”
Scaled models of the proposed
designs of the Cultural
Centre will be exhibited for
staff and students to comment
on nearer to year’s end.
Before Phase Six, Phase Five saw
the construction of the Convention
Centre and the Teaching Hub
(Blk 56), according to Mr Chia.
Phase Si x i s expected
to be completed in 2011.

Another air-conditioned canteen
will be built at Blk 51. It will serve
students from the School of Life
Sciences & Chemical Technology
(LSCT), the School of Film &
Media Studies (FMS), the School
of Humanities (HMS) and the
School of Engineering (SoE).
This new canteen is expected
to be built within a year.
Benjamin Toh, 18, a second-year
Molecular Biotechnology student,
said, “Blk 51 is a perfect place for the canteen because it is much
nearer compared to the food
court at SIM University (UniSIM).”
Tan Jin Hao, 19, a third-year
Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering
student, also said he
was excited about the new canteen
because “UniSIM canteens
and Canteen One are far away”.
Mr Chia added that the
polytechnic is prepared to
absorb the cost of maintaining
an air-conditioned
canteen, and “will not pass on
the cost to canteen stall-holders.”
He also said if student fees
were to rise, it “would not be
due to Phase Six projects”
as Phase Six is
funded by the Ministry
of Education through
the Development Grant,
which is approved
on a project basis.
Student fees partially
cover operating
expenses like staff
salaries and utility bills.
Funds for bursaries
and overseas study trips
are separately managed

Canteen 1 Jap. Agreed. But crazy crowd and long queue.
Canteen 2 CaiFan, not very nice but cheap and filling. depends on the food they prepare everyday.
and Canteen 2 are all the cheap foods. thats what i think lmao. and I always go Canteen 2 since im from enginnering.
And hell, 1 term gone liao I haven check out Canteen 3 and 4.

Overall from my own experience, I'm more devoted to Canteen 2 because of the quantity of food there. Second favorite is Canteen 1 because of oogling girls? Haha that's not the point. It's because of the low cost of food. Next one should be canteen 3, followed by canteen 4. I haven't eaten in Canteen 4, but it's really eerie. It's like finding a frog in a jungle.

How about Canteen 5? Canteen 5 is SIM canteen there. Consists of two canteens; the left side and the right side. Both are really like two different worlds. But then, SIM canteens are considered as canteens for the Science school division such as School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology.
